About us

Established in 2022, Tidewater Compost was born out of the desire of wanting to do something more. Born and raised in Virginia Beach, VA - Owner, Cameron Kania, has taken an unconventional route into the composting world. A financial analyst in the mortgage industry by trade; however, his passion lives in his gardening and in building soil. Like so many, his home garden is his haven and he’s been enjoying the fruits of his labor, tangibly and figuratively, for years. During this time, he’s become very passionate about making compost at home and doing what he can to make a positive impact on our earth.

Like for so many, the pandemic hit, and this led to lots of self-reflection and soul searching. A late-night Netflix binge resulted in stumbling upon a documentary ("Kiss the Ground") that changed the course of Cameron’s life. “Kiss the Ground” speaks to the vital importance of soil health and its direct impact on global warming and climate change. Can you guess one of the topics discussed in the film? Composting! This was Cameron’s “Aha!” moment. As the credits of the film disappeared from the screen, it was in that instance that Tidewater Compost was born.

Immediately, Cameron began to take a deeper dive into what local composting resources were available for residents and businesses within Hampton Roads. Much to his surprise – none existed.

Fast-forward to now, Tidewater Compost is the area’s first residential and commercial organic waste diversion and compost company. We realize many people would love to compost, but are short on time, space, or energy to do so. Our services provide easy access to composting, while facilitating educational programs to help grow the community composting movement in Hampton Roads.

Together, we can compost our communities for a more sustainable future.
